Frequently asked questions

Clear answers, without getting ahead of the product.

Backstory is still taking shape. These answers describe the stable principles and boundaries behind it—not future availability claims.

What is Backstory?

Backstory is a local-first personal context compiler. It is designed to turn selected digital history into portable, source-cited context that you can review and give to an AI.

Is Backstory an AI assistant or chat application?

No. Backstory is not primarily a chatbot, a general AI assistant, or a proprietary memory service. It prepares context for the AI and prompt you choose.

Does Backstory change my original data?

It is designed not to modify or delete original source material. Corrections, labels, exclusions, and compiled outputs remain separate from the evidence they refer to.

Does local capture mean my data is shared?

No. Local capture does not authorize external sharing. A handoff should be explicit: you review the context, choose what to export, and decide where it goes.

What kinds of context is Backstory designed for?

The product direction includes personal material such as messages, notes, mail, and documents. Specific support and limitations will be published only when the corresponding workflows are verified.

Can I download Backstory now?

This public site does not currently make an availability promise. Release details will be published after the required product, privacy, signing, and external-readiness checks are complete.

Does this website track visitors?

The Backstory site does not include application analytics, tracking pixels, accounts, or data-collection forms. The hosting and security edge may apply short-lived protections against automated abuse.

How can I get in touch?
